Dead baits such as Ballyhoo, Mullet, Gar Fish and small Barracuda are ideal for targeting billfish (Juvenile Black Marlin and Sailfish ) and other pelagic species including, King Mackerel, Wahoo , Dolfinfish and Yellowfin Tuna , Live baits such as small Barracuda and Bonito are caught whilst fishing commences offshore and are ideal for Black Marlin. Lures used range from hard body trolling plugs "Rapala type" lures) and small bullet heads are best for Dolfinfish, Bonito and Trevally (and the smaller pelagics) although the larger soft skirted pusher style lures are best for Marlin and Sailfish . Live and dead baits are generally trolled at 5 to 6.5 knots, with lures being more effectively trolled at 7.5 to 9.5 knots. The distances that the baits and lures are trolled at behind the boat depends on sea conditions and the lure and bait type, generally between 30 to 50 metres behind the boat. Tackle consists of trolling rigs with line classes varying from 30 lb to 50 lb, depending on the size of the fish sought. Boats troll five to six rigs with generally 1 or 2 teasers. The "bait and switch" method is gaining popularity with many of skippers i.e. towing baits with no hooks and teasing the fish to the back of the boat, where upon a bait with hook is then dropped - a visually exciting way to fish!! Tight Lines !!
